4.1 Orientation materials explain how to navigate both the LMS and the course
5 points (Compulsory)
My favorite methods to meet this standard are to include a course tour video and support resources for the learning management system (LMS) in a “Start Here” module/section of a course.
Course tour videos are short explanations of first steps a student takes, the main course structure, as well as an overview of some of the unique aspects of the course. This also helps orient students to the learning management system at the same time.
Orientation explanations are then spread throughout the “Start Here” module for targeted topics.
Steps to take
Include a “Start Here” module of your course that provides resources such as course navigation, required technology, help resources, and information about the instructor.
Create a course tour video that explains first steps (including how to log into the learning management system) and briefly shows and describes the course. Send the video out to students via email and put it in your “Start Here” module. When placed in the module, it is helpful to provide a time stamp of when to start the video so they are past the how to login portion.
Include orientation statements and directions in the “Start Here” module for topics such as course overview and technical resources.
4.2 Orientation materials are readily identifiable within the context of the course
3 points
The best way to address this is with a “Start Here” module, which has already been mentioned many times in previous standards.
The name of this module is descriptive regarding the action you want students to take… start here. It should be centrally located so it is one of the first things students see when they enter a course, while also allowing a quick return to other areas.
Steps to take
Create a “Start Here” module of your course.
Ensure it is clearly visible as soon as a student first enters a course.
Put orientation material, such as the course tour, course information, syllabus, instructor information, and technical and academic resources, in that module.
4.3 Information regarding required/optional technology, including how to access/acquire, and any additional costs, is provided
3 points
This is another great addition for a “Start Here” module, or a dedicated technology resources area. This information should be provided for all types of technology that you use that extends beyond the learning management system resources you already included as part of standard 4.1.
Note: It is also best practice to include technology access information each time you expect students to use that resource (such as in an assignment overview).
Steps to take
Include information about additional technology in a “Start Here” or dedicated technology resource section.
This should include detailed instructions for access, purchase, and explain associated costs (if any).
Provide access information whenever the additional technology is used throughout the course.
