This rubric is one of several course design rubrics used in higher education to gauge quality assurance in online courses.
Rubrics are also excellent resources if you want to check your own course based on evidence-based practices.
Although created by Anthology, the ECP rubric is learning management system (LMS) agnostic. It is a dichotomous (Met/Not Met) rubric with 53 standards in 4 different categories.
For those who can host their course in Blackboard, there is a free review process, with courses who meet standards winning Exemplary status. The ECP rubric is free to use and you can find it at this link.
About the rubric
Below are answers to common questions.
How many points do I need to earn an Exemplary rating?
You need 163 (of 191) points (85%) AND have met all 14 of the compulsory standards.
What does compulsory mean?
Of the 53 standards in the rubric, 14 of them are compulsory. This means that you must have a met rating on every single one of them in order to win an ECP award. You will know something is compulsory on the rubric because it will be worth 5 points.
How long does the review process take?
This varies wildly. I have had faculty members hear back within a few weeks. For the majority, it takes several months. How many peer-reviewers are available drives this (you can help by becoming one). One of my own awards took over a year. My best advice is to make sure every duck possible is in a row, write a very clear applicant’s narrative, go ahead and submit… then forget you ever did it. 😊
